Free Spanish & English classes!

For some of us, speaking and understanding Spanish is a useful skill in our everyday lives. For those responding for emergencies, it could be life saving.

“Sometimes firemen show up, and no one involved can speak English to them,” explains Angels for Action President Carmen Salavarrieta. “It helps for them to learn some.”

Angels for Action provides absolutely free Spanish classes not only to firefighters, but to anyone interested in building a solid base in the world’s, and Plainfield’s, second most spoken native language. Lessons are each Thursday from 6 – 8 pm at the Angels for Action office behind PNC Bank at 209 W 2nd St.

The conversational classes are lead by Plainfield High School students, who gain valuable experience through teaching and being involved in their community. “They really enjoy it,” says Salavarrieta.

At the end, I asked to see part of a firemen’s Spanish lesson

I don’t speak much Spanish, so last week I decided to attend myself. Two teachers and four students – and no firemen that day – meant even more personal attention, and in just over an hour I added a lot to my limited arsenal of skills.

Because of the loose, conversational environment and small class size, I was able to ask a lot of questions, replacing my deeply ingrained French vocabulary with the often-similar Spanish equivalents. I plan to keep attending, and I hope to see some of you.

Note: There will be no Spanish class on Thursday, April 9, 2015. You can always call Angels for Action at (908) 333-5656 to inquire about the schedule.

English Classes, too

While we were busy picking up Spanish, residents learned English from other high school students in the next room. Due to the greater demand, English classes take place Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6 – 8pm and Saturdays from 10am until noon. These lessons are free, too, and fill a larger room rather easily.
